We Can Be Heroes (Just for One Day): The 11th Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts
(Phoenix, AZ) Grand Avenue Arts & Preservation, Strange Family Circus and PAPA, LLC are proud to present the 11th Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts on November 12, 2016 at 6pm. As a family friendly, 100% participatory event, PAPA is a unique pedestrian and bike procession which brings the community together to celebrate artistic expression in downtown Phoenix. This year’s theme “Superheroes!” aims to bring out the super, brave and bold in all of us. Partnering once again with the Grand Avenue Festival, festivities will occur in the neighborhood of Historic Grand Avenue.
Members of the community do not need to register to march, however, participants who choose to compete for prizes must check in by 5pm at PAPA Headquarters in front of Unexpected Gallery, 734 W Polk Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007. Contest categories are broken into 5 “Avenging Leagues”: The Colossal Costume Clan (costume contest), The Flock of Fabulous Floats (float contest), The Brilliant Bike Brigade (decorative bicycle contest), Splendiferous Sidekicks (kids and pets contest) and the all encompassing Society of Gathering Multitudes of Droves (best group effort contest). Keeping with PAPA’s policy to promote an ecologically friendly event, participants must be non-motorized.
The public procession lines up at 6pm. The parade, lead by Fushicho Daiko and RPM Orchestra Marching Band, will travel northwestward on Grand Avenue from Polk. The procession will pivot at the intersection of Grand Ave and 15th/Roosevelt, near Bragg’s Pie Factory, and will travel back down Grand Ave, returning to the PAPA Headquarters at Unexpected Gallery. The PAPA finale will feature a dazzling fire show by local favorites, The Circus Farm. As part of the Grand Avenue Festival, participants are encouraged to come early and stay late for the art, music, food, make-and-take crafts, art car exhibition and other fun events. The PAPA Headquarters main stage will host The Untrashed Recycled Fashion Show, Tucson’s funk duo Mik and Scott, local dance troupe Spell, and Fiasco Juggling and Sideshow as well as planned surprises in support of PAPA’s superhero theme.
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts unites the arts with the greater community by providing an open-to-the-public, mobile expression of downtown Phoenix life. The free, family event is presented by the Production Agency for Participatory Arts, LLC. PAPA is a New Times Best of Phoenix winner.
