Strange Family Circus and PAPA, LLC are proud to present the 10th Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts on November 14, 2015. As a family friendly, 100% participatory event, PAPA is a unique experience that brings the community together to walk in a free celebration of artistic expression in downtown Phoenix. This year’s theme “Big Top PAPA,” will help commemorate the decade of PAPA with carnivalesque fanfare. Partnering once again with the Grand Avenue Festival, festivities will occur in the neighborhood of Historic Grand Avenue.
Members of the community do not need to register to march, however, participants who choose to enter the contests must check in at PAPA Headquarters on the SW corner of 15th Ave/Grand Ave/ Roosevelt Ave (across from the Oasis Hotel) by 5:00pm for judging. Contest categories include: float, group, bike, costume and “cute” (typically kids and pets). All participants, including contest entries, must be non-motorized (bicycle, skateboards and other human powered vehicles are acceptable). PAPA takes pride in its “non motorized floats” policy to keep the parade ecologically friendly.
The public procession kicks off at 6:00pm. Lead by local Taiko group, Fushicho Daiko, the parade will travel southeastward on Grand Avenue from 15th Ave and Roosevelt. The procession will turn around in the intersection of Grand Ave, 7th Ave and Van Buren and will travel back up Grand Ave, returning to the PAPA Headquarters site for the finale. As part of the Grand Avenue Festival, participants are encouraged to come early and stay late for the art, music, food, make-and-take crafts, and other fun events scheduled for the day. The PAPA Headquarters main stage will host such events as The Untrashed Recycled Fashion Show, Tucson Funk duo Mik and Scott, Mexican ska punk band Los Lerpes, and will feature a set piece of "Big Red ” and "Pug Bug"of Walter Studios. Stilt walking, circus arts and fire performers will perform throughout the day and will close out the evening.
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts unites the arts with the greater community by providing an open-to-the-public, mobile expression of downtown Phoenix life. The free, family event is presented by the Production Agency for Participatory Arts, LLC. PAPA is a New Times Best of Phoenix winner.
